As part of Crown Student Living’s design team Jubb provided Civil and Structural support in refurbishing and partly demolishing/re-building an existing office block in the centre of Cardiff.

The two-storey rear section and upper level of the 5-storey concrete framed building will be demolished and replaced with a steel frame and in-situ concrete deck. Adding a new 3 to 4 storey addition to the rear and one to two storeys on to the remaining building footprint. These additions, with the refurbishment of the remainder will create a 378-bed mixture of “twodio” and “studio” apartments, with supporting leisure facilities including gym and cinema room on the lower ground floor.

The existing masonry cladding was over clad with a combination of stonework and timber insulated cladding systems. The cladding was mechanically fixed back to the masonry outer skin and additional wall ties installed to ensure structural stability of the façade.

Detailed assessment of the existing concrete frame were undertaken to ensure a 50 year future life span including checks on disproportionate collapse.

Situated in the centre of Cardiff in a fully developed environment with an existing tenant, consideration to the forms of construction was a heavy influence, in additional to weight issues in adding additional storeys.
